"The hopes that closer B.J. Ryan would return next month and boost the Jays' post-season chances were wiped out yesterday by season-ending elbow surgery.

Ryan underwent so-called Tommy John surgery in Cincinnati and the Jays, floored by the worst-case scenario, must now try reconstruct their bullpen.

Undaunted, Jays' GM J.P. Ricciardi said the club has no intention of waving a white flag."
